Iceland in a Kayak is Completed!

Riaan and Dan yesterday completed their circumnavigation of Iceland in a kayak. They became the first people ever to complete the journey in a double kayak in a little over 5 months. Here are a few final images from the beach front at Husavik, where the guys were greeted by an excitable crowd and the local Mayor – who presented the kayakers with some beautiful flowers.

Thanks for following the images here at Icelandinakayak. You can find out more about my latest projects by following me on facebook, or twitter

The Penultimate Paddle

Yesterday, Riaan and Dan completed their penultimate paddle to put them within 25km of the finish line. Here’s a before and after snapshot which help to bring to life what the guys go through on the water. The paddle started with a posed shot at around 4pm, and ended at around 11:30pm with a clamber up the beach.

Timelapse Sunset

There has been some stunning Icelandic light in recent days, perhaps it is the final treat before a long harsh winter. I am going to post a couple of images every day or so here, starting with this one from monday evening of one of our camera men rolling a time-lapse on some jesus light.

Kayakers from the Water

Riaan and Dan have now rounded the west fjords and are well and truly on their way towards the finish line at Husavik. With less than 150 sea miles still to go, I took a boat to get some shots of the guys from the water.

The Wreck of Gardar BA64

There is something quite fascinating about a ship wreck. Patrickfjordur is home to the unique sight of Gardar BA64, the wreck of a fishing trawler beached there in bad weather in 1981. The ship is the oldest steel ship in Iceland and is quite a sight against the backdrop of the steep fjords. We were lucky enough to come across the vessel a couple of weeks ago in some stunning Icelandic evening light and spent a good hour or so investigating the scene. Here are a few photos.

Snæfellsjökull

We are now in the western Fjords with about 440km left to complete our journey back to Husavik. The western Fjords are amazing, a dream for any landscape photographer and arguably the most beautiful corner of Iceland.   Read the rest of this page »

Power Generation – Icelandic Style

We ended up at a geothermal power plant around 1am a couple of nights ago, perfect timing for the sun skimming the horizon. It was quite spectacular seeing all the steam rising from the ground all around us. Iceland leads the world into turning this steam into green energy – the power plants are just visible on the horizons. Read the rest of this page »

Heading for Wipeout

This is probably my favourite kayaking photo from the trip so far. Dan and Riaan are about to get wiped out by some formidable beach swell as they attempt to land on the black beaches of Iceland’s south coast. Read the rest of this page »

Hvannadalshnúkur – The Top of Iceland

A couple of weeks ago we had the opportunity to summit the highest point of Iceland - Hvannadalshnúkur. Riaan, camera man Darren and myself were up at the crack of dawn to go for the summit which stands at around 7,000ft. Here are a few photos from our journey. Read the rest of this page »

Wild Seas at Vik

After 90 days on the seas, Riaan and Dan successfully hit the half way point at Vik. It wasn’t with out drama. The guys arrived at the landing point in from of the famous Vik spires at 11:30pm, the wind and swell had picked up much more than expected and the landing was very difficult.
